Magnetic Eye Records - The Wall [Redux]

Happy New Year and welcome back to our monthly blog, the Copper Feast Menu. This month's menu was written to the sound of Magnetic Eye Records' cover album of the classic Pink Floyd concept album, The Wall - check it out here.

New Year, Old Albums

Not much news to report here from us, though at the time of posting, we will have completed the shipping process for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Polygondwanaland which I know a lot of you have been keen to get your hands on.

I'm very sorry for the delay in getting them all out the door from when they arrived. It was just a busy time of the year as it always is at Christmas, coupled with the fact that I was somewhat overwhelmed with the support I had for this pressing and there was a lot for just me to take on. Nevertheless, they should all be in hand within the first couple of weeks of the year, ahead of our our original estimated date, so I'm very proud of that and I want to thank everyone for their support as well as my girlfriend Carys who has put up with about 6 weeks of non-stop packing on my end as well as getting her hands dirty when I needed a bit of help.

More good news from Polygondwanaland is that once shipping is completed, I estimate there will be about 60 copies left for anyone still in need. About 20 of these will be made available alongside the poster while the rest will form part of the 2018 Copper Feast Bundle, which is a fantastic way of getting hold of everything we announced in 2018 (including Foot's Buffalo) at about 25% off RRP!

On the subject of Buffalo, these should be arriving with me at some point in January, so look forward to receiving your copy in February! If you've not yet heard the album, which is one of my favourites from last year, go and check it out here cause you won't be disappointed.

Now moving onto this month's blog. As is always the case at this time of the year, we see a lot of end of year lists featuring some of the best that the year has had to offer. The only minor difference this year is that we have consistently had a steady stream of fantastic records coming to our attention over the course of the past 10 months and I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss some of my personal favourites.

MØL - Jord [Holy Roar Records]

First off is one that I've been really hitting hard this last couple of weeks, and that's the debut album from Danish black metal band MØL, entitle Jord (Out now on Holy Roar Records). Feeding into a genre heavily dominated by the likes of Alcest and Deafheaven, MØL have succeed spectacularly in laying down some of the most gorgeous instrumentals I've heard on an album for a long time. It's atmospheric and polished while being absolutely crushing. Not only is Jord a fantastic debut from these Danes, but Holy Roar have also released an instrumental version of the album which demonstrates excellently MØL's musicianship and technical capabilities.

Next up is one you'll find on a lot of end of year lists out there, and that's this year's surprise Sleep album, The Sciences, which dropped out of the blue the day before Record Store Day, 4/20. This album is non-stop riffs from start to finish and prettymuch picks up where they left off on Dopesmoker and The Clarity. With the smell of weed strong in the air, I was lucky enough to get tickets to their only UK show this year here in London and it was amazing, truly on another level. Whoever did sound at the gig absolutely nailed it, everything just went straight through you and you felt every note. Seriously, if you ever get a chance to go to see Al, Matt and Jason, you will not be disappointed.

Sleep - The Sciences [Third Man Records]

Back onto The Sciences, it was released on Jack White's Third Man Records as a complete surprise on the 20th of April, with fans, myself included, clamouring down to their local store to pick up the rare indies-only release that prettymuch sold out everywhere within a couple of hours. Check out 'Marajuanauts Theme' and 'Sonic Titan', as well as the standalone single 'Leagues Beneath', which was released separately a few moths later. Oh, and there's a live album coming next year too!

Next we have something very different from the previous two records, it's a broody, moody, melancholic yet beautiful self-titled folk record from Montreal-based artist CADE. I stumbled upon this fairly accidentally during a quick bandcamp binge and was taken aback by the gorgeous vocals combined with such a wonderfully atmospheric instrumental track. 'Forest' and 'Homesick' are two standout tracks, but in reality, this album consistently drops great song after great song. Out earlier this year on Fox Food Records, you can still pick yourself up a bargain and grab the cassette for £5 - cracking deal.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - King of Cowards [Rocket Recordings]

Again, we have another band that I was lucky to see here in London, and that's Newcastle-based doom/psych band Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (Pigs x7 for the sake of my sanity) and their second record King of Cowards. Now, first of all, this live show is amazing! I honestly can stress how good these guys are and how much you'd be missing out if you had the chance but didn't go. This one's for fans of Sleep and Electric Wizard et al, and just crushes you throughout. Out on Rocket Recordings at the end of September and what with the Pigs x7 boys being label-mates with Swedish psych gods Goat, you just know that this is gonna push all the right buttons for all the King Gizzard, Goat and Oh Sees fans out there too.

Foot - Buffalo [Copper Feast Records]

Finally in this brief and by no means complete list of some of my favourite albums this year, comes from one of our own. Yes it's a bit cheeky, but who cares, the album is that good! You guessed it, it's Buffalo by Melbourne's own Foot!

So we are releasing this on its one and only vinyl pressing in a month or so (get you pre-orders in here) however the album was actually released to the world to critical acclaim back in January of 2018. The likes of 'Thunder Cave' and 'Cactus' drive the album through gear after gear in such a way that the most hardcore fans of Kyuss and Alice in Chains would love, while the mellower moments such as 'Buffalo' give the listener time to reflect and draw on just how gorgeous and album this is. Best enjoyed out in nature away from the bullshit of the rest of the world.

Until next time, happy new year and I look forward to all your support and bringing you some of the best music we can offer in 2019!

Cheers

Callum
