It’s Easy When You Know How...

Welcome to the first ever edition of our monthly blog, the Copper Feast Menu, where I plan on discussing the current goings on at Copper Feast along with what we’re listening to, what we are thinking and where we are going.

So as you may or may not know, I started this record label up as a small side project in April/May of this year with the minimum aim of putting out a handful of my favourite records on vinyl every year and already we are growing bigger than I anticipated after just 9 month as we stare down the barrel of our 3rd release, with a couple of massive projects in store for 2019! But more on that another time...

As I'm sure it is for a lot of you reading this, music for me is a release from everyday life and a way of putting soundtrack to the emotions that I’m swept up in at the time and getting involved in the music industry in some capacity had been an ambition for a while.

While discussing my plans with the woman in charge (Guys, you know what I'm talking about..) I’d often said “I don’t care if we don’t make any sales”, with my thinking being that it would be satisfaction enough to put something deserving out there onto a format which oozes quality and creativity. I think is important to go in with this mindset to an extent, as it’s this passion that drives the operation here at Copper Feast.

So, like I said, earlier this year I kicked things off after a few months of spitballing ideas for label names and quickly got the boys from Right Shitty on board for our first release, their 2016 debut album Bachelor of Arts (which you can still pick up from our store or listen to below!)

So far so good eh? Production ticked along nicely and before we knew it the test pressings were approved and we had our final product in hand - a very proud day! But the hard work had only just begun...

So with all of our releases, my first checkbox is a big one, that is that I need to be a fan, a massive fan in fact of the record in question. I can’t get fully behind something if I’m not already swept up in what it has to offer.

My issue with BoA is finding a way to get others to share my feelings about the record. Of course, music is subjective and tastes, emotions and experience all drive the feelings towards an album, which change from person to person. However, I strongly believed, and still do, that anyone that's into the whole garage rock scene, or just good ol' rock 'n' roll in general who hears BoA would be instantly into it. It’s that good.

I had record stores here in the UK agree, with Rough Trade listing it high up on their new releases list back in August. But it’s the music communities out there that need to hear it. The fans, the record buyers, the people on the streets. The record is already well known back in their home of Saint John, Canada having won a host of regional awards back in 2016/2017, however with the growing popularity of garage rock titles in the last decade such as Jay Reatard’s Blood Visions or FIDLAR’s self-titled debut, Bachelor of Arts absolutely deserves to be heard by the masses that would love this album if only they could hear it!

Getting your music heard is tough for anyone, even more so for a small band or label with little to no budget for advertising, so it’s on us to be creative, and that’s exactly what we are doing. The internet is a wide place with so many opportunities for us to push boundaries and we will keep trying to get our releases out to people that would wanna hear them.

That said, do let me know if you want to promote our releases, any help goes a long way!

Anyhow, that’s that for now and until next time go check out Right Shitty on all your streaming platforms, you might just surprise yourself.

Cheers!

Callum
